GM-GMC: 1996 Chev 2500 305 engine, auto. 130,000 miles, wire strands, internal corrosion

Question
"Soft Start" The engine spins over for several seconds, then starts, but idle speed gradually increases to normal idle speed. When starting normally, the engine starts imediately then the engine idle speed usually flares to aproximately 1000 RPM, then idles down to normal idle speed.------------------------
Followup To
Question -
Starting 5000 miles ago, the engine has soft starts when the engine is warm. Cold the engine starts normal. It has never failed to start. Performance is normal including pulling 10,000 lb.trailer. Fuel pump pressure check OK. No codes set. The term "soft start", doesn't start with authority like when cold. Doesn't occure every start. Other local mechanics haven't had
this problem.

Thanks In Advance

You will have to provide more information as to your term SOFT START. This is NOT a term that is used in the automotive field.

Answer
OK, I have seen this many times and the main fault is that no-one wants to take the time to TEST as they would rather GUESS.

The most common faults are:

1. Temperature sensitive intermittent battery fault. Needs to be tested when HOT.

2. Temperature sensitive intermittent starter fault. Needs to be tested when HOT.

3. Internal corrosion under the insulation of the battery cables or ends. remember back years ago when you had to replace the battery cable ends and when you stripped back the insulation on the battery cable and the wire strands were discolored.?.
