GM-GMC: 1997 GMC K2500 Surburban, axle bearings, water pumps

Question
Hi Harry.... Thanks for your help....

My curent vehicle is a 1986 K2500 6.5 diesel...300,000 miles..

I am looking at the '97 .. 120,000 miles...

Everything looks clean..  BUT.. It is powered by a 454 Vortec V/8..... Auto-Trans

With good maintainence, how long do these power trains last... I'm so happy with my 6.5 I'm not sure I could go back to a gas rig...

Thanks Danny

Answer
Danny,

My answer is nothing but speculation.

There probably is not an upper limit to mileage on today's vehicles.  Ignition and fuel systems keep them in such a high state of tune that longevity well over 100,000 miles can be expected.

If the vehicle has had good maintenance, it should reach 200,000 miles without too much trouble.  Just remember that there are parts that will fail and are more likely to do so as a vehicle ages.  Water pumps, alternators, starters, and most things with bearings in them (such as rear axle bearings) are all more likely to fail as they get older.

I share your view about the diesel:  I don't like driving my MR2s nearly as much as one of my diesels!
