Honda: Cars strange behaviour, Honda, civic

Question
I'd appreciate your input.  I have a 1992 Honda Civic LX 5-speed hatchback.  About 4 months ago, the car would buck somewhat when put into 3rd gear, and in what ever gear, the car wouldn't run, and then this disappeared for over 3 months.  Last week, the problem returned.  Now the car sometimes stays in 3rd and 4th and sometimes it just stops running.  I have no problem restarting the car, so I guess its not the starter.
Any ideas.

Howard

Answer
Howard, You are correct, the starter is not your problem. The failing starter would not cause an engine misfire or stalling condition. The fact that your car restarts, without any problems, leads me to believe the electrical portion of the ignition switch is the culprit. If it's contacts are arced the car will stall. If you can duplicate the stalling condition when the car is not moving, try holding the ignition key forward slightly. This would allow the ignition switch to make contact in a slightly off center position. Get back with me if this does not help and I will get some more details on when the car is failing.
