Honda: Honda sluggish and jerks, vacuum leaks, vacuum lines

Question
Hi I have a 1990 Honda Accord EX. Automatic it has 140,000 miles on it.  I have had the car for 1 year now.  I replaced the ECU a week after I got it.  About a month ago I noticed she was a little slow on her get up and go at lights.   So I had a friend (2nd year in college for mechanics). He replaced the cold intake with a new K&N system, spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cab, and battery terminals.  Today on the freeway she slipped out of gear and slowed considerably then kicked back in.  Going through town at lights it was sluggish took awhile to pick up speed.  I am not sure what is going on with it.  my boyfriend did install a large audio system in her he got a aux battery and isolator for her but has not installed it yet  I didn't have the up very loud when this accrued on freeway..  If you could give me any help that would be awesome.  My friend in college has since graduated and live in Seattle.

Answer
I am assuming it is an automatic, the good news is that the basics have been replaced so that can ruled out. I don't think the audio system has anything to do with it however, it sounds more like a fuel delivery issue. Being that old of a car, most Honda fuel pumps go from 150k and up, sometimes they act up, sometimes they just die.

I would also change out the fuel filter just to make sure there is good flow from the tank to the engine. It is good to replace this anyway every 3 years or so.

It also sounds more like a transmission issue as well but that year accord is also known to have vacuum leaks, theres so many of them. You may also want to inspect those to rule everything out. The hoses can be cracked OR the rubber fittings that connect them harden, in any event, it is not a fun task.

So.......those would be my first go to suspect problems, fuel pump, fuel filter and a variety of vacuum lines to check.

Hope this helps.
