Honda: ticking $ knocking sounds, heat shields, honda civic ex

Question
Hey,
I have a 95 honda civic EX and it has a ticking and knocking sound right after I shut off the car and park it.
Sometimes when I press gas petal, it has a tick/knock sould also.  I have 91k miles on the car.  How can I tell if my timing belt is wore or needs to be replaced?
I had a tune up 1 1/2 year ago, it cost me $290 and I don't know if they changed the timing belt.

Thanks
Danny

Answer
Danny,it sounds like your exhaust system has a bunch of small rocks caught in between the pipe and the heat shields.you can usually blow them out of there with compressed air.If your timing belt had been replaced during the tune up it would have cost you a lot more than $290.Honda recommends you replace the belt every 90,000 miles or 6 years whichever comes first.I highly recommend replacing the water pump at the same time since it is also driven by the t-belt.    Ray
