Mercedes: 83 mer 300td, freeway speeds, turbo diesel

Hello Robert,
    My 83 300td has no power and is shifting at 1600 rpm in first and second gear but the freway speed  is good. It seems as if it has only  three gears and will not down shift. need help soon.

Please tell me again your problem. An 83 turbo diesel? Is the vehicle smoking during acceleration? Are the shifts from 1 to 2 normal. and to 3 OK. How is the performance in passing on the freeway?
When you take your foot off and allow the vehicle to cost at what speeds does it down shift back through second and to first.
Is the performance OK in reverse.

At freeway speeds of say 50 MPH and you press the accelerator to the floor does it drop back to second gear for passing? When it shifts into passing gear and you hold down on the accelerator without release, at what speed does it shift back to high gear.
