Mercedes: car stuck in low gear and will not shift back into park when car on only when off will pass nuetural gear, mercedes benz e320, 2000 mercedes benz e320

I have a 2000 mercedes benz e320 and it is stuck in low gear when i turn the car on will shift to drive but I am in low gear and when I go to shift to park the gear will not shift pass neutral I have to turn car off to shift pass neutral what is going on ?

I do not quite understand why the lever would be in low range when it should be in the park position anytime the engine is turned off. This is a automatic yes?

One of the safety features incorporated into more and more vehicles. Are sets of switches connected to the transmission shifting mechanism.
These feature include requiring that you hold your foot on the brake to engage the engine start. There are solenoids in the transmission that keep you from moving the control lever until you have the brake on.
I would take the vehicle to an independent transmission specialist and have it checked out. There may also be some fault codes that will indicate the area that need attention.
Before you allow anyone to work on the vehicle, make sure they are familiar with your e320 or similar transmission.
