Saab: Running very rough if at all, chevy ford, saab 900

Question
Hello! My wife's father recently gave us a 85 saab 900 turbo.I know very little about these cars,I have an 86 monte carlo and chevy/ford is more me.The car was givin to us with idle prob's.The car wouldn't idle cold and once drivin and warm it idled high(1.5 up to 2000 rpms. Then upon shifting into 4th gear on highway it just lost all power.I restarted and it would rough idle with absolutely no throttle response, gas pedal all way in and nothing.Upon talking with her dad we came up with throttle pos sensor.I went and installed it and it def idled better but ran real rough with little response still. My dad pop'd distributor cap cleaned cap rotor n ran better but still real rough he turned distributor a good bit and idle raised n car ran normal.(fig it jumped time somehow). So i was driving again and same highway and all a sudden car got really rough n studdery.pulled over and tried playing with distributor again but barely runs.(i can turn distributor a very good bit left or right from the original position to get it to start but not run good at all.I was thinking timing chain jumped but again i know very little about saab's.)was gonna pull cover tomorrow but i cant find timing specs for it w/o buying haynes.

Brian:
As noted in my profile, my expertise is limited to "NON-TURBOS", and the problem you describe is not something I've ever encountered...so my guess is that it is turbo-related.
By the way, buying HAYNES or any other source is the VERY BEST THING YOU COULD DO as a do-it-yourselfer who wants to save lotsa $$! [and get it fixed properly].
An excellent online complete data source is <www.alldatadiy.com>; $25/vehicle/year, but very worth it! Likely more extensive then HAYNES.
