Question -
the truck was not started for 3 weeks (running fine prior to this) - dead battery, would not hold a charge.....bought/installed new battery - now it starts but idles very rough,if you don t keep giving it gas it will stall, seems to run fine at higher rpm s (above say 1200-1500)and when the engine gets warmed up - could you tell me if there is an idle valve/selonoid, etc that needs to be replaced and if so the location/replacement procedures, etc...thank you for your assistance - jim

Answer -
3 weeks is nowhere near enough time for a decent battery to just kill itself.  You may want to have your alternator checked before proceeding with any other fix.  If that's fine, send me the engine code or atleast the trim of 4Runner you have so I can look up the engine and tell you what else to look for.

thanks for getting back to me....the battery was the original (2001) - i have no codes and the alternator light does not come on....i started it last night, it started right up but would stall if i didn't keep on the gas (1200+rpm's) i let it warm up and when i let off the gas it again had a very rough idle and would stall - this is a 2001 4Runner 4x4 automatic with the V6 engine

Hmmm...  As far as tune-up, when was the last time you did it?  Before we start messing around with anything, I'd like to make sure the engine is up to spec.  Have you checked the fuel filter?  As well, have you tried any injector cleaners?  A bottle of something like "Seafoam Engine Treatment" or Lucas Fuel Injector Cleaner, when used as directed, clean really well.

As well, check the spark plugs for the condition of their tips.  A proper spark plug will show a slight powdery or crusty white buildup.  That's a good burning cylinder.  Anything else.. well.. there's an entire chart that I can send you if you want.

If this doesn't help, write back.

P.S> Do you hear any tapping from the engine?  Ticking?
