Hi Paul, I have a '95 Toyota truck with 4WD, 5 speed, 2.4 liter, 4 cylinder motor. I'm thinking of putting in the TRD level 1 cam. If I were to have the valves adjusted, is adding the TRD cam just a simple swap-out, or is it a more invoved service?
Answer -
JUST A SIMPLE SWAP REALLY
Paul, I called a local shop where I'd probably have the work done and he quoted me $70 for a valve adjustment and $290 if he also installed the TRD cam that I would supply. He said, among other things, that he would have to loosen the head bolts to access the lashes or something. I would try the install myself, if I thought that I wouldn't ruin the motor. Should I have it professionally done and are these guys just scamming me? I also asked a local Toyota dealer and they quoted $350 but I think that they would also include the cam. A mailorder Toyota dealer where I would like to buy the cam said essentially what you said...no big deal, not alot of extra work. Help? Again, thank you.

Answer
THE LOCAL SHOP IS TRYING TO STICK IT WAY UP IN YOUR !@#$%.!
IT'S SIMPLE TO DO. IF YOU KNOW HOW TO DO A TIMING BELT THIS WILL BE EASY.
LET ME KNOW.
IT'S JUST A MATTER OF TAKING THE OLD CAM(S) OUT AND PUTTING THE NEW ONE(S) IN... JUST MATCH THE MARKS ON THE CAM AS IF YOU WHERE DOING A TIMING BELT.
AND THERE IS NOTHING TO ADJUST AS YOU ARE ONLY SWAPPING A CAM.
