Volkswagen: trouble shoot 1978 bus not starting, vacuum hoses, vacuum leak

Question
Hello Ron,
I have just bought a 1978/type 2 CE bus. It has been sitting up in the mountains for three years, and rodents made nests in it. Literally-nests in the exhaust, in the engine itself-all twigs and acorns. They chewed up all of the wiring. I cleaned it out and replaced all wiring, new dist cap, points, plugs, fuses, belts, hoses etc. It started and ran for about 5 min then quit and won't start again. I've checked thesamba.com for all specs and they are correct. Still won't start. Turns over fine but I smell gasoline. New plugs are now black. I speak volkswagon but the fuel injector is not my best subject..any suggestions?
Thanks in advance-
Robert

Answer
Hi Robert,

Are you getting any spark? If so, see below:

Check all of the vacuum hoses and make sure that rodents didn't chew through anything.  The FI system is very sensitive to any type of vacuum leak.

Next, I would replace the cyl head sensor attached to the left head.  It is not expensive.

Finally, make sure all of the electric fittings are clean and gunk free.

Let me know how you make out.

Ron
