Volkswagen: head temperature sensor, worse case scenario, rubber grommet

Question
QUESTION: I have a 79 super beetle.  I have had the car for one year and have just recently noticed that the car does not have a head temperature sensor (temp sensor II).  I have found the part online but I hwas wondering where it plugs into.  Thanks for the help.

ANSWER: Hi Dan,

This is supposed to screw into a threaded port near the #3 cylinder head.

There is usually a circular cut out with a rubber grommet over it which is located on the #3 cooling tin.

Good Luck!

Ron

QUESTION: I know where it screws into but I was wondering where the electrical connection plugs into.  My car doesn't even have one so I have nothing to reference.  I also have not seen any pics in the Bentley manual.  Thanks.

Answer
Hi Dan,

It plugs into a plastic wire connector which goes into the tan-colored fuel injection harness.  It should be dangling loose, unless someone cut it off.

However, if you cannot find it, I can tell you where it leads.  The wire is intended to go into pin #13 of the ECU (Electronic Control Unit) behind your rear seat on the passenger's side.

Worse case scenario, you may have to trace it from there.

At least, now you know where the wire terminates!
