Volkswagen: no electricity going to fuel pump 79 cabrio, beetle convertible, screw driver

Question
Please help!  I have a 1979 Beetle convertible that has spent the past two months at a body shop getting painted.  The paint is done but the engine won't turn over now.  There is no electricity going to the fuel pump!  What could cause this and how can I fix it?  Help!!

Answer
Hi Dan,

Try cleaning the contacts on the double relay that is connected to the ECU located behind the rear seat on the passenger side.

Also, check / clean the contacts that connect to the starter motor.

Finally, to check operation of the fuel pump, perform the following:

1) Turn key to 'on' w/engine not running
2) Take off the air filter cover and use a small screw driver to move the flap open a bit.  Moving the flap open should cause the fuel pump to whirl into action.  You should be able to hear it running under the front of the car by the tank.

Most likely, the contacts got some dust in them from the sanding.

Let me know how you make out.
