Volkswagen: 6-disk cd changer skips, worm gear, meticulous work

I have a factory 6-disk cd changer in my 2001 Jetta. It worked alright for a couple of months after we bought it last year. Now, it plays fine for 15 to 20 minutes and then it skips every 2 or 3 seconds. sometime the cd's also have a problem loading and an error message will come up. Is this something that can be fixed???

  Sounds like the laser tracking mechanism is gunked up, it's typically a greased worm gear inside that gets caked with dirt/dust.  Not much you can do unless you are into removing and disassembling the unit to clean and lubricate it.  Very delicate and meticulous work, not recommended for the typical DIY'r, but it can be done.
