Volkswagen: Autostick, forward gears, torque converter

Question
I am looking into a VW that has an Autostick. If I am correct that is where it is both and automatic and a manual at once? Could you please tell me what I am trying to describe and if I am right now that works. I know how to drive a Manual and an Automatic but how this hybrid works stumps me.

Answer
Hey Bryan,

Sure, no problem.

The Autostick is pretty simple:

It has 3 forward gears:

Low
1st Gear
2nd Gear

Low is used really to start out quickly, or for snow.
1st Gear is used up to about 45 MPH
2nd Gear is for highway driving.

----------------------------------------

How it works:

1) You start the VW. (there is no clutch on the floor)
2) You start out by putting the VW in first gear to take off. (the stickshift has a switch in it, so when you push into first gear, the car operates the clutch automatically)
3) Once it's in first gear, your foot is on the brake, it has a torque converter, so basically all you need to do now is let go of the brake and accelerate.
4) If you are going over 45, you simply let off on the gas and pull the lever to 2nd position.

If you are at a light or stop sign, you just need to remember to always start out in first gear or low.

It is pretty simple, I love them.

Hope this helps.
