Volkswagen: no gas to carb, accelerator cable, car fuel

Question
hi Ron i been restoring  73 beetle and its my first resto. project ever. i was doing pretty well until i ran into a snag with my fuel system . at first i thought it was my tank because it was rusty any how so i replaced that with a new one, and filled it up a little over half way, but still no fuel. then i cleaned the lines and tried again, but still no fuel finally i got a new fuel pump which i installed today, and checked to see that the rod was being pushed up and down, yet still no fuel, not even a drip. is there anything else that i might be missing any help u have to offer would be greatly appreciated thanks.

Answer
Hi Jack,

If you put front the VW up on ramps and unplug the fuel line where it comes out under the the rear of the car, fuel should run freely.

If no fuel comes out, remove the line that comes out from under the tank.  If fuel still does not come out, the clog is in the tank itself and it needs to be removed and cleaned.

If the tank seems clear, you will have to 'snake' the fuel line with an old accelerator cable to see if there is a clog somewhere between the front and rear of the car.

However, if you are getting full flow to the rear of the car, either the fuel lines are reversed on the pump, or the pump push rod is the wrong length. (they make two different sizes)

Let me know how you make out, it will help other readers!

Thanks,

Ron
