Volkswagen: 73 vw starter, eye ball, engine compartment

I need to take the starter off my bug, but am only able to find one bolt.  How do I get it off?

Hi,

One bolt is on the bottom. (which you have found)

To access the second one, you have to go into the engine compartment, reach in back of the fan housing on the passenger side (with a 17 MM wrench) on and unscrew the nut.

If you eye-ball where it goes through the starter, you can get a better idea as to where it comes through into the engine compartment.

That's the trick.
