Volkswagen: 1990 Turbo Diesel Jetta, auto parts store, turbo diesel

Question
Hi Ron,
I have a 1990 Turbo Diesel Jetta I just recently started driving.  As I
am either in reverse or first gear, just getting moving, the car
whines a pretty awful noise.  Almost like a squeal.  Any suggestions
as to where I should start to try and fix this problem?  This is my
first time driving standard and I don't think it was doing this before
I started driving it, could it be something to do with the way I was
shifting?  Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Matt,

Go to an auto-parts store and buy some 'stop-squeal' for the engine belt(s).  It's under 5 bucks.

Read the directions, spray it on the belt(s) and see if the sound stops.  If so, well you found your problem.

The belt(s) need to be replaced ASAP.

If it is still squealing, let me know.  Provide me with as much detail as possible, and we'll diagnose it further.

It's probably a belt issue, however.

Good Luck,

Ron
