Volkswagen: Which beetle to buy, gilmore enterprises, compressed natural gas

Question
I Live in Pakistan wanted to buy old Volkswagen i.e 1969-1972. Can you guide me which model is the best to buy.

I want speed, with best fuel consumption. What would be the realistic top speed and acceleration.
Wanted to convert it from petrol to CNG (Compressed natural gas).
Wanted Volkswagen with air condition. Can you guide me if it is possible to have Air Conditioning in such old models. Moreover also guide me which A/C unit is best for these models. Normally in Pakistan i have not seen any volkswagen with A/C
Wanted the one which is most reliable. Also there is a myth that the volkswagen of such old model heated too easily as the nrmal temperature in Pakistan ranges from 35-55 degrees. If this myth is true than what is the solution.

Moreover after buying what i would need to make my volkxwagen in running condition.

Moreover what are the buying tips for an old aolkswagen. Do i go for which is in good condition or to go with a scrap unit and rebuild it again.

Answer
Hi Umer,

I would suggest the 1971 beetle, for the following reasons:

- The oil cooler is now external, so the engine does not get as hot.

- The engine has more horsepower.

- It is 12 Volts, and available in a Super Beetle model.

- The temperature in Pakistan will be no problem for a 1971 Beetle or Super Beetle!

Unfortunately, I do not have any knowledge about converting the vehicle to CNG.  However, if you find anything out,  let me know as I'd be interested.

Air conditioning is readily available for a 1971 VW.

You can take a look at the following website:

http://www.gilmore-enterprises.net/GH/Air/SB.htm

Some tips would include:

1) Making sure that the engine runs strong, has been maintained, and the compression is good in all cylinders. (around 80-120 PSI in each cylinder)

2) Check for rust,  this is usually the biggest problem.

3) Make sure that the clutch, transmission, shifts well.

VW parts are readily available, so you should have no problem finding them.  Also, they are very easy to fix.

Take Care and best of luck!
