Volkswagen: 1969 beetle fan housing, preasure, fan shroud

Question
Hello,
I recently (yesterday) aquired a 69 beetle that needs a new generator and pulley.  I easily pull out the carb and disconnected all hoses however the fan shroud doesn't want to come out.  It moves pretty easily about one and then stops. I have put a little preasure on it and it stil didnt go.  I am lifting straight up. It seems to be getting caught right in the middle.  Do you have any advice?  Thanks so much!

Answer
Hey John,

a) Much easier to remove the engine.  It takes all of 1/2 hour to do so.

b) If you don't want to do that

- There are 2 screws on the side of the fan housing that hold it on.

- There is also a lever in the rear that connects to cooling flaps, which connects to a thermostat underneath the motor on the passenger's side.  This has to be disconnected from underneath.

- There is an oil cooler that sticks up and goes into the middle of the fan housing...you also have to make sure you clear this as well.

This should take care of your problem....but again, the engine is simple to remove (4 bolts) and you can be done with this in under 2 hours.
