Volkswagen: A/C not working, hook ups, pressure guage

Question
Mr. Wolff:

I have 1999 Jetta with 2.0L with 2.9 At the time of towing, someone put the hook on the high side hose and got it busted. Nobody is taking the blame. Well, I had the hose fixed and reattached with new seals. Now how do I evacuate the system, I have the evacuator and the manifold pressure guage with 3 long leads. My question are:
1) Want to learn the hookup for evacations.
2) How to install r-134 in the system?
3) There is no power at the connector on compressor so as a result the A/C clutch is not moving at all.

Answer
Hi,

The compressor is designed not to kick on if there is no refrigerant in the system.

The hook-ups for the evacuators are different in every model, and I am not sure where the outlets are.  A Jetta book which has the 2.0/2.9 engine will easily help.

To install the r-134 (presuming that is what it always used)  Go to a local auto store and buy 4 small cans of the refrigerant, and one of the filler hoses with the gauge on it.  Attach the hose and can to the "Suction" section of the filler hose. (it has a plastic cap on it).  Run the car with the A/C on high and hold the can upside down.   Keep filling the system until you get a "Full" pressure reading on the gauge.

The compressor will eventually turn on under the pressure of the cans you are putting in.
