Volkswagen: Radio Code 94 jetta, scan numbers, directional button

Question
Nothing worked.  how do you know if it is a beta 4 radio?  I do not have a manual to the radio , and my radio has no tp or ta button. all it has on the front of the radio is mode, scan, numbers 1 - 6 and a left and right directional button to search for stations.

Also not relating to the radio, I went to start my car up this morning, i only had the car for a week and half, it took me about 4 times to crank it and then it hesitated for awhile, what should i check for the rough start up.  I feel that when the winter comes, i will have a hard time starting it.-------------------------

nothing comes up , I has SAFE across the screen and will not let me enter in anything, the only response that I get is when the mode and scan is depressed, it blinks six times and then stays in safe. hitting other buttons does not work and it is fustrating cause this has to let me enter the code one way or another. I remember seeing it once when there was a 1 followed by zeros, but that will not come up at all anymore.

Hi ron, very helpfull with the last question.

This is something new, my battery died and My radio is stuck in safe mode.  I hold the mode and scan buttons together and watch safe blink 6 times, and it stays in safe, it will not go to the 4 numbers to put the code it.  I tried disconecting the battery for the night then plug the battery in, and it will not get out of safe.  I tried disconecting the radio and like again, it will not go out of safe and it will not let me enter the code, any idea on how to overcome this.

Hi Anthony,

Try not holding the mode/scan buttons and just enter the code, let me know how this works out.

I believe you have the Beta 4 Radio, so try this procedure.
First, let the radio sit with power for about 1 hour and 1/2 as it is in a lock mode most likely.

Press TA & TP (check your book, it could be another 2 keys, as the procedure has changed over the years) together, then the 1000 appears. Enter the code using the 1-4 buttons then press TA & TP (or the two keys your manual lists) again to confirm.

Next:

1) Turn Radio on: Display should read "SAFE".

2) Enter your code using button "1" to enter the first digit of code, button "2" to enter the second digit etc.

3) When all 4 digits of the code are input correctly, press either the manual setting rocker (>) or the search (>>) button and hold for 2-3 seconds. Then release.

4) The radio should then play. If it does not, press either the "FM" or "CC" button.

Let me know how you make out.

Answer
The coolant temperature switch usually is the cause of hard cold starting.  They are under $50.00.   If you purchase a Haynes Manual, it will show you how to diagnose it with a simple volt/ohm meter.  (It varies by year).

As far as your radio goes, if the procedure given in the book is not working, and you are sure that you are putting in the right code, the radio may be shot, unfortunately.

As a last-ditch effort, I'd bring it to a VW Dealership with the code number and see if they can get it on for you.
Don't make an appointment, just see if a Tech can come out and quickly do it for you.

The cost should be no more than $35.00.

Let me know how you make out.
