Volkswagen: 94 VW Jetta III GL - 2.0 GAS, coolant temperature sensor, vw jetta

Question
I bought  a Jetta may 1,  and the themp gauge reads about 215 when in stop and go traffic. when on the highway the temp is fine about 175. But it wories me when it goes past 200. The used car dealership said that they did a pressure test and it is fine but I am still unsure.  The fans go on no problem.  What steps should take to correct this, can it be a inaccurate gauge??  What is normal operating temperature??

Answer
Hi Anthony,

I would check 3 things:

1) Ensure that you have the proper coolant / water ratio in the radiator.

2) Make sure no bubbles are in the system.

3) Have the car plugged into the VW diagnostic system to check the ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor.

This should cost you no more than $40-$50,  if they are kind, they may even do it for nothing, if that's where you bought the vehicle.

Jetta's are notorious for running a bit on the hot side,  however, I'll give you some piece of mind:  The thermostat is not even designed to open until 189 degrees.   After that, it's the responsibility of the cooling system to maintain that temp within about 20-25 degrees from the 189.

I feel that your car is just fine,  but in the interest of caution.  Bring it back to the used-car or a VW facility and have it checked for piece of mind.

Happy Motoring!
