Volkswagen: Engine cranks but wont start, volkswagen jetta, engine cranks

Question
Please help me. I have a 1991 Volkswagen Jetta GL 1.8 engine. I just replaced the fuel pumps and now when I try to start it the engine will just continue cranking but not firing. There is now no spark when I tested the spark plug connections. I did find a wire that was not attached to the coil and re-soldered it on, but still nothing. The check engine light will not even come on when trying to start it. I have the Chiltons manual for it but it does not help me at all (Hayes book much better, but can't find Hayes no more). Please help me I am completely at at a loss. Thank you,
Kim Millard

Answer
Hi Kim,

First, make sure that the spark plugs aren't drowned in gasoline from all of the cranking.  Smell the dipstick and make sure that it doesn't have a strong odor of gas.  If so, change the oil and plugs.

If you had to solder a wire to the coil on and the check engine light isn't going on as you turn on the key most likely the coil is shot.  (the terminal post is bad)

Before you replace the coil, check to make sure that you are getting 12 Volts to the it with the ignition switch on, and ensure that the coil is properly grounded.

If you get 12 Volts, and know you have a good ground, I'd suggest replacing the coil.

I priced them out and they are approximately $63.00.  You need to specify the chassis number of your Jetter GL 1.8 to get the right one, however, here is a link to a 1991 Jetta GL Coil:

Kim, let me know how you make out.

Thanks,
