Volkswagen: Gas tank/Pump, fuel pressure regulator, one peice

Question
I currently have the gas take half way down. I will give you the break down of why in a moment to see if I am doing the right thing. Meanwhile, I have the bottom brackets off but it is caught by the gas filler. The tank and filler are one peice. This is a 1988 Jetta, can you walk me through how to drop it all the way?

Now I am dropping it because, I pulled the gas line from the Gas filter, the side coming from the tank, and turned the key over, pressing the gas and so on, but I only got a little gas (like turning a facet on just past the point where it is drops and turns into a stream. The reason for this is I am not getting gas to the Gas Distribution block, and not it appears not even to the gas filter. I changed the filter, money well spent either way. So I am dropping the tank to change the gas pump, however after the line comes from the pump it goes to a box that is also conected to a gold piece, about the size if a large pill bottle (doesn't look like a pump though) then it continues on to the gas filter and so on to the gas distribution block. What do you think the box and bottle looking gold thing is? It has three lines coming in and out of it and a couple lines go into the box, thats not the pump right, according to the parts house, local Imports parts house the pump is in the tank. Thanks for all the help, sorry this is so ling. I await the chance to fix my only car.

Answer
Hey Justin,

At least you narrowed it down to the pump!    Last we talked, there WAS fuel pressure to the distributor, just not to the injectors.

First, that bottle looking thing,  I believe that you are referring to the fuel accumulator.   It's job is to keep the fuel pressure at around 73 PSI for the system to work.  It works in tandem with the fuel pressure regulator.

As far as the tank goes,  the best thing you can do is get the Jetta book.   If memory serves me right, you need to remove the flap/cover over the tire housing.  That will expose the filler neck.

Also, did you make sure you checked to see if there are screws where the filler neck comes out of the car?

Again, try that flap over the wheels,  and check where the filler neck connects to the car body.

Let me know how you make out Justin.

Good Luck,

Ron
