Volkswagen: 78 Bus Fuel System, fuel pumps, salvage yards

Question
Hi! I have a manual '78 Bus with fuel injection. The fuel pump was missing when I got the vehicle. There was that nasty smelling gas that I drained.
What fuel pumps are compatible with the fuel injected engine I have? (The recommended one is VERY EXPENSIVE brand new)
How should I treat the tank now that it is empty of that lacquer?
THANKS!

Answer
Hi Wes,

Congratulations on your bus purchase.

Here are two sites that I can recommend buying them used:

www.ebay.com

The fuel pumps are very robust.  I hear very little problems about them going bad; you are best off trying the used route.

Compatible Pumps are:

1975-1979 VW Beetle and Super Beetle

1975-1979 VW Bus/Type II/Transporter

(you can also check out salvage yards)

As far as cleaning out the tank,  try the following link:

http://www.eastwoodco.com/

They have everything you need to get your tank like new.

FINAL NOTE:  Make sure you replace all of the fuel hose with "Fuel Injection Hose".   Regular fuel hose will burst under the high pressure fuel injection requires.

Enjoy, and let me know when she's running.
