Volkswagen: 74 Super Beetle Fuel system, charcoal canister, fuel hoses

Question
I have a 74 super beetle convertable, I have replaced the gas tank, filler neck, and fuel hoses; when the top is up you can hardly ride in the car because the gas fumes are too strong. What could be causing this? Could it be the internal line that runs through the car? What should I check because there are no apparent leaks?

Thanks, Mike.

Answer
Mike,

Help is on the way!

Here is what you need to do to eliminate that annoying smell.

a) Make sure the filler neck rubber is on correctly and tight.

b) There is another rubber hose next to the filler neck, it is about 3/4" and braided.  Replace it.

c) There are some small lines that connect to a white/yellowish plastic bar which is an evaporation chamber.  Replace the yellow bar, and replace the fabric lines as well.

d) Now look in the Bentley manual and for the 1974 and ensure that the hoses that go back to the engine compartment are ok.  Use the manual to ensure proper hose routing.

e) There is a hose that connects to the engine fan housing, on the passenger side; it blows through a charcoal canister (located under the passenger-side rear fender) which abosorbs fuel tank vapors.  Make sure that is hooked up as well.

f) Finally, check the fuel lines that run under the tank thru the tunnel of the car, and near the rear of the engine.  If they haven't been replaced in the last 5 years, change them as well.

Sounds like a lot of work, but it's really not too bad, it should cost you under $50.00, and get rid of that SMELL and keep you safe.

Take Care,

Ron
