Volkswagen: gas mileage, gas mileage, float chamber

Question
i get terrible gas mileage with my 72 super beetle and someone told me it might be because the carburator is out of adjustment but im talking like 80miles to a tank so i didnt think that just a misadjustment like that could cause such a serious loss in efficency so i thought maybe there might be a leak but i haven't been able to find it.... what do u think the problem might be?

Answer
I agree,  I do not think that your carb could go out of whack that badly.

Here are three things to check:

1) Follow all fuel lines, make sure there are no leaks from tank to the rear.  Your nose will be the best guide.

2) The float on the carb could be stuck, this is a common problem.   If you have a service book, find out where the float chamber is (in the rear) and tap it gently.  See if this helps.  If not, you may need to disassemble the carb and fix the float.

3) Turn on the motor and briefly smell exhaust, does it smell heavily of gasoline?   Does the oil dipstick smell of gasoline?   If so,  again, the float could be sticking OR the carb. is loose,  or the gasket that holds it to the intake manifold is bad.

Try this troubleshooting, it should fix your problem.

Good Luck,

Ron
