Volkswagen: Rear Wheel Bearing, vw campmobile, wheel bearings

Question
Hello,

The rear wheel on my 1969 VW Campmobile gets very hot. So hot that you can't touch it. Would this be the wheel bearings heating up?
I tried to remove the wheel to check it,but was unable to get the wheel off, perhaps due to it getting so hot. How can I remove the wheel?
thanks,

Answer
Hi,

Your break shoes could be sticking.

To remove the wheel back off the brake adjuster stars, which you can view through the front of the brake drum,  by lining the little hole up on the bottom.

Next, you need to remove the cotter pin and that big nut, with either a socket or a pipe wrench.  Either way, you are going to have to get another pipe to loosen that bolt, as it is on there tight...slide it over the pipe, or socket wrench to extend the handle, and thus, the leverage.

It would probably be easier to let some penetrating oil soak in over night.

Once the big nut is off, and the little screw on the front face of the drum is reomved drum itself should slide off towards you.

If it is the bearings:

You will need:

Robert Bentley - Offical VW TRANSPORTER SERVICE MANUAL 1968-1979.   This will tell you how to do that job.

All the parts you will need can be found at:
