Volkswagen: Vw Jetta help, vw jetta, radio ps

Question
I have a 1998 Vw Jetta K2. First, the driver's side window (power) has been acting wierd. first it would start to go down if you did not keep the button pressed all the way to the top. It is a "one touch" button. Tonight, I noticed the window was not up all the way, just about a half inch or less, but I could here the wind, so I pushed the button, and now it will not go more than half way up. It also seems to be making a scratching sound off and on now. Is this a repair we could do on our own? Second, We replaced the battery a few months ago and the radio will not work now and reads "Safe". We have lost our manual, and when we called the dealership, they said it would cost $200-300 to get the code. Something to do w/ a satellite. I think that is crap. We are not going to have them do it, is there any other way to get the code? Or get the radio to work? Thanks, Jennifer

Answer
it sounds like the window mechanism is broken. there is a repair kit available which contains a new cable and two new clamp / guide pieces for the bottom of the window. the replacement parts are cast alloy, the originals were plastic. this is fairly common. On the radio, i think they are quoting way too much to obtain the code. You could try putting the ignition on, then switch the radio on, now switch the ignition off and back on. sometimes this causes the control modules to communicate and sometimes unlocks the radio. otherwise you might aswell replace the radio. (ps, this radio sequence may or may not work. it depends if it is the original radio etc.......) As for the window it is quit an advanced repair, so a mechanic may be required to do it.
