Volvo: 850 glt station wagon, position sensor, glt

Question
I had a rebuilt transmission put into my 95 850 glt station wagon about a year and a half ago.
since then most of the time it seems to run fine. However, once or twice a month in the morning it won't shift out of first gear. When I shift into neutral and then shift back into drive it seems to run fine. Also, once every couple months (on average), usually when it's been sitting over night or longer, the transmission will start running very rough. It feels like it's not going into low gear so it's like you're starting in 3rd gear. If you turn the car off and then start it up again it usually seems to run fine again. I've taken it back to my transmission guy numerous times. He says the code reads 730 but that doesn't tell him exactly what the problem is. He's wondering if maybe it's the computer. I was hoping you may have encountered something like this or have some ideas on the subject. Thanks.

Answer
Joe,
I would replace the gear position sensor. When the sensor gets old the small contacts inside wear out and then the trans does not know what gear you have chosen. That is why when you shut off the car or move the gear shifter then restart and shift it again it make the contact and all is now working.
