Volvo: Volvo 240 overdrive, volvo 240 gl, volvo 240

Question
QUESTION: Hi,
I have a 1983 Volvo 240 GL and I put it into the garage to have the overdrive re-connected (it was broken at purchase). Since I got the car back, it won't come out of overdrive. Is this a problem? Will it harm the gearbox and should I take it back to be fixed? Thank you!
Colin

ANSWER: Colin,
So every time the trans shifts, it goes into overdrive(4th). I am assuming that it is a an automatic trans. That should not be a problem, unless you are driving the mountains and or pulling a trailer.

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: It's actually a manual transmission: I didn't make myself very clear. When you start the car, the overdrive light is not displayed, but when you get into 4th and switch to overdrive it doesn't disengage even when you change down (i.e. the overdrive light stays on). I am assuming that it is still 'in overdrive' from them on.
Oh, and I'm not going over any mountains or pulling any trailers (to my knowledge!).

Answer
Colin,
Being that you have a manual trans and it stays in overdrive I would have it checked to why. If the overdrive is engaged in first second and third, that is not good for it. It is made for use in 4th only. Have the car tested, just to be sure that you are not doing more damage.
