Volvo: turbo, turbo engines, volvos

We are looking for a used Volvo for our daughter away at college.  Is the
reliability of the turbo engines in question?  Should we avoid cars with this type
of engine?  Any other hints for used Volvo shopping? Thanks !!

The turbo engine offers more power and possibly more resale. Yes there are more moving parts and "some" additional chances that things could break. My choice would be a turbo. By all means have the car inspected by a shop that works on Volvos, since they know all the little problems that occur. Get a list of things that have been done and a list that states what will need attention. That can be used as a bargaining tool on the final price.
