Volvo: 1992 Volvo 740turbo wagon, fuel pressure regulator, rotor wire

Question
My '92 740 turbo wagon has about 135,000 miles on it.  Last week it started to lose a little power on the highway, but nothing that seemed too serious.  I had put cheap gas into the car and I thought maybe that was the problem.  The following day it stalled twice, but then started up again after a few minutes.  This happened frequently when there was cheap gas in the car-- which naturally I avoid but hey it's over $3 a gallon now.  A few days later I put good gas in it and it still dragged but that's about it.  The following day, I was driving in stop and go rush hour traffic in the rain and it stalled twice.  As long as I was moving it would keep going, but when I stopped for lights it the engine revved and slowed down and the car shook up and down, as if the engine was trying very hard to keep working.  I got to my destination, but after it sat for two hours I tried to start the car again and the car turned over and shut down.  The battery did not go off, the engine just turn on and off.

We had it towed to a mechanic who has worked on the car but is not an expert on Volvos and he said his computer couldn't get a reading at all.  He said he thinks it might be a sensor but we need to take it to the dealer or someone who specializes in Volvos.

We bought this car 3 years ago for $3500 -- it had 81,000 on it.  Since then we've put over 50,000 miles on it and spent about $5,000 in repairing it.  Is it worth the money to keep it?  What do you think the problem is and about how much do you think it will cost in repairing it?

Any advice will be appreciated, thanks.

Answer
Kerry,
There maybe a considerable amount of money to spend, are you ready? Hard to say what the cost will be with being able to make some tests and driving the car. Find a Volvo tech in the long run it will cost less, they know where to look to find problems.
Stalling could be low fuel pressure bad fuel pressure regulator. Has the car had a tune up recently? Cap rotor wire how are they? Blocked fuel filter. To mention a few.
