Volvo: volvo v40 1.8 running really rich, power management system, volvo v40

Hi myself and the wife have just bought a volvo v40 from a freind as a good gesture as he was short for cash .my problem is its a volvo v40 1.8 se estate and its running really rich its only doing 23.7 mpg and have been told that its running poor ive also had every want to be mechanic telling me alsorts such as it could be the air filter (which ive changed) and also the choke could be stuck on..Im very keen to keep the car its lovley to drive and having kids loads of room but cant afford £50 a week in feul My other problem is its terrible to get it into first or reverse gear all the rest are fine just them two once again mechanic want to be,s have told me it needs a new clutch or gear box surley there wrong as this car is costly to run and keep now ....THANKS ..

There should be some fault codes in the power management system that will indicaate the fault for the fuel comsumption. Have someon read all the code and work out those faults. The clutch may in fact be bad. You will need a tech to drive it and inspect it so a good diagnosis can  be made.
