Volvo: volvo 850 ecu differences, stock ecu, clutch fork

Question
I have a 95 Volvo 850 turbo. I have changed it from an automatic to a manual. I modded the auto harness so that the back up lights would work and the car would start. I uninstalled the tcm.  A few months later the clutch fork rubbed the wiring harness until it hit a twelve volt and the harness burst in to flames. It fried relays, the engine bay wiring harness, and the ecu. I talked to some Volvo people on volvospeed.com I was told that a 96 ecu would be my best option because i have a 97 volvomotorsports.com engine with no egr. The gauges have not worked since i put the ecu in. I think there is an issue with the version of motronic ecu (4.3-4.4). The car is an early 95 model with working obdii port under the change tray. I have been told the stock ecu was 95 motronic 4.3 and the ecu i put in was a 96 motronic 4.4. I was also told the 4.4 ecu would not communicate property with the 4.3 gauge cluster. I want to know if there is truth to this before i purchase a 95 4.3 ecu? I would appreciate any of your expert thoughts!

Answer
Tim,
The 4.4 system is more sophisticated using evap and fuel tank sensors to preform on board diagnostics for the readiness system, witch may turn on check engine lights if the readings it receives are not there, and they would be because a 95 did not use that system. Will it run the car? Maybe, I can not see why it wouldn't. As for the dash gauges, I can't for sure tell if they are different. How about a parts guy to look up 95 and 96 to see if there is a different part number. I do know that the 96 you can test and reset some parameters in the cluster. A 95 you do less. My gut feeling is they are different. I am not sure if what I told you helps, as generally I have not ever replaced one ECU with another on that car.
