Volvo: Turbo on 1999 S70 AWD, lucas oil additive, harmful emissions

Question
Jimmy,

I purchased a used 1999 S70 AWD with about 77,000 miles on it. Shortly after I bought it, I noticed that it was consuming what I think is a lot of oil. The consumption has been about 1 quart or even a bit more than that every 1,300 miles. The car now has over 84,000 miles, and there has never been a drop of oil on the driveway. The turbo does have oil on its exterior, and the tail pipe has black stuff on it. Despite all of this, the car runs great--plenty of power. Is this oil consumption harmful to my engine, and is this causing harmful emissions?

Answer
Hello Kevin! When you check the oil level, make sure the car has been off for at least 15 min. Otherwise, you will get a false reading. If there is some oil on the turbo, it may be using some oil through the turbo unit. It is only harmful if the oil level gets too low. Next oil change try using Lucas oil additive. It may help, if the turbo is using oil. It can be found at most auto parts stores.
