Volvo: S70 Starting Problem, foot on the gas, faults

Question
Jimmy,

My wife's parents drive a 2000 S70 sedan.  I am concerned for them, because of intermittent starting problems that they have been experiencing.  On occasion (once every two weeks or so) the car will crank, but, not start.  Happens when the engine is cold and warm.  Generally, if they wait 20 to 30 minutes, it will start, as though there were no problem.  They brought it to the dealer (where the car is serviced regularly).  The dealer attempted to replicate the problem, keeping the car for a day, and it didn't happen.  The problem continues to happen, and, may someday cause them a problem, because of their age.  One additional piece of information, it happened yesterday, and, after waiting a while, they tried it again.  The car started, but, they had to keep their foot on the gas, or, the car would stall immediately.  Any ideas?

Thanks!

Answer
Hello Patrick! Although that can be caused by many things, I would check the immobilizer sytem for faults. There could be a problem with the immobilzer antenna ring that picks up the signal from the key. I would let the dealer check that. It is best to leave the car until the problem occurs. I'll be here if you need more help.
