4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: Problems re-starting 1998 Ford explorer, camshaft position sensor, ford explorer 4x4

Question
I have a 1995 Ford Explorer 4x4 4.0L, Everything starts up just fine when the veichle sits for 5hrs or so, but when i restart it after eg) going to the store the RPM's are all over the place from 1000RPM to 200RPM and it bounces there for about 30 secs and then levels off. Sometimes it even chokes itself out, and i have to give it a little gas. Could it be the air intake sensor or something like that? where is it located?
Thanx.

Answer
Sounds like you may have a camshaft position sensor going bad. It is very typical to the powerstroke diesel engine in the truck but same exact symtoms. Try a cam sensor. it should be on the front of the engine maybe around the top of the water pump. get a new one and try to see what the plug look slike and look for that to find it, also you may want to buy a Chiltons or a Haynes manual for it too!
