4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: 88 Chevy Cheyenne, rear axel, rear tires

Question
I have owned small 4 wheelers (Atv's) before never a full sized PU.
My Question is is it normal for the rear wheels to freeze when the front axel spins (lose traction). I was pullin' stumps when this happened, and the truck was spinnin' to drivers left but the rear axel was not movin'. Has anyone ever had this happen? most other times it works fine (snow, mud).

Answer
Oldwild,

I'm not sure what you mean by "Freeze".  Whether you are in 2-wheel drive, or 4-wheel drive, at least one of the rear tires should be pulling, or spinning.  If you have a locker installed in the rear differential, both rear tires should spin.  It sounds like you have something broken in the transfer case, or you have some broken gears in the rear differential.  I would have this checked out as soon as possible to prevent further damage.
