4 Wheel Drive/SUVs: oil pressure, oil pressure gauge, oil pressure sending unit

Question
I have a 1997 Jeep Wrngler 6 cyl. I was driving today and the check gauge light came on. I noticed that I had no oil pressure. I stopped the engine and checked the oil-fine, no problem.Re- started the Jeep and light stayed off but no pressure. Engine did not get hot and no burning oil smell. What is it and is it safe to drive?

Answer
Joe,

I really suspect that you have broken a wire, or have a faulty oil pressure sending unit, or bad gauge.  Don't drive it until you get it checked out at a reputable shop, or can trace out a faulty component or bad wire.  If your oil pressure gauge is correct, you may have lost an oil pump.
