Tips on Buying Cars: Longevity of Different Vehicles, lexus lx450, gmc blazer

Question
QUESTION: Can you give me a quick opinion on the length of service to be expected when comparing Chev/GMC Suv's to Toyota/Lexus Suv's?  We're buying used for my son and trying to justify higher prices on T/L's vs C/G.

ANSWER: Puzzling to me as to why someone would want to put a young driver in a SUV, or even drive one themselves, but I guess that's not the question.

The question is actually too general.  I'm not sure which actual models that you're comparing.

If you'll give me some more detailed info, I'll see if I can return some.

QUESTION: Thanks for your help!
Quick answers to you're thought process are 1) he alone will not be driving the vehicle and the space is advantageous for us, 2) there is a safety aspect with the size from a height and collision perspective that is appealing; and 3) in Northern Minnesota with our snow, snow banks, streets and our driveway, a SUV is not mandatory, but many times the only way to keep moving :)  Gas mileage is not favorable but  use will be somewhat restricted.

Right now looking at a 97 Lexus LX450 with 155,000 miles that is in tip top shape vs a similar Chevy or GMC blazer type with about 100,000 miles and is not that much cheaper.

Answer
Basically with that kind of mileage on either vehicle, any type of failure could occur at any time.  The main difference is that it will cost 2-3 times as much to repair the Lexus.  I myself would rather pocket several thousand dollars and buy an early 90's 6 cyl Land Cruiser.  The older Toyota products were much more reliable.

Good luck!
