Tips on Buying Cars: buying used SUV, 22re engine, risk check

Question
Hello,
I am looking at getting my son a 1991 Ford Explorer.  It has 174,000 miles on it and looks to be in great condition.  The 4 wheel drive does not work though.  Otherwise I think it is a pretty good vehicle.  Before driving the 2 1/2 hours to see it, I was wondering what you think.  They are asking $1,500 for it.  Thank you!

Answer
Its always very risky buying a vehicle of that age and mileage... its also hard to give advice one because at that point the reliability of the car depends more on how it was cared for than who built it.  I would consider choosing either a truck or a car rather than an SUV... Unless he actually needs the extra storage space AND 4wd - he could probably get by with a car or a truck instead... hopefully with fewer miles... a toyota pickup with a 22RE engine is probably one of the most reliable engines for older trucks - same for 4Runners with the same engine.  If the explorer has a 302ci engine they have been reliable too but not much over 200,000 miles... Its always a risk when buying something that old with that high of mileage.. you should try for a simpler vehicle with lower miles (2wd truck, car, etc..) if reliability is important.  Otherwise, if it appears to be well maintained (hard to tell), it will be just as risky as most other vehicles in the price range... Use your judgment on the condition and upkeep the best you can, or have a mechanic check it out... There are no guarantee's but every step can help reduce the risk.  Check for oil burning, leaks, etc.. the usual or take along someone who knows to look for such.. These are tale tell signs of poor upkeep or a dying motor.
