-----Question-----
Hi Robert
Could you please suggest a few options for our next family vehicle?
Our Taurus Wagon was totaled in an accident, but since the eldest of my two children will soon get his own car,we have moved out of the wagon/family car phase.
I would like a mid size to full size four door sedan, but not ready for the Cadillac/Lincoln phase.
A vehicle that is not a pig on gas and fairly economical to repair and get parts.
year 2000-2004? I dont want to go over $1500.
Thanks!

The chances of you finding a decent car from 2000-2004 for under 1500 will be nearly zero - did you mean 15,000 by chance? because that would change things drastically... if you meant 1500 you may have to get an older car.. any 5 year old car that is worth the money will cost more than 1500 (atleast when it comes to a family vehicle)... Let me know which is the correct number and I will answer the question.. I don't want to answer the wrong question by accident, Thanks!

Answer
You can get some pretty nice cars for ~15000 that are 2000+ models... are you looking for anything with performance? or just something that goes from point A to B.. and do you want luxury...? how many miles? The truth is you can get a 4 door BMW with 80,000 miles for 15000 or a 4 door honda with 30k miles for 15000... so the mileage is important... If reliability, comfort, etc.. is more important than luxury - a good place to start would be...

(all models from 2000+)

Full size:
Toyota Avalon
Acura RL
2000 Lexus LS 400

Mid Size:
Toyota Camry
Honda Accord
Volvo S60 (higher maintenance, but if safety is a big issue, worth a look)
Acura TL
Lexus GS 300/400/430
2000-2004 Infiniti I30/I35

Compact (but not too small):
Lexus IS300

Of course there are a ton of compacts but you said you wanted a mid-large car... I just threw in the IS300 because it is a 4 door compact that is a nice blend of sporty and luxury... always worth a look...

Any of the above mentioned cars are worth a look... and you should be able to find one in your price range without too many miles... if you are interested in domestic brands.. the ford five hundred, Chrysler 300, and dodge charger would be worth a look... but because they are all fairly new you may have a hard time finding one for 15000... I would stay away from the most of the slightly older domestic built sedans, they were mostly carry overs from early 90's designs up until recently. A v6 Dodge Intrepid may be worth a look, but their reliability will be a much greater gamble compared to the other cars...

I say check out "consumerguide.com" .. look at the used car section, they have reviewed almost every car ever made in the last 10 years.. you can see if you like the styling and if the testers liked the car... It's a great resource for car shopping.  Take a look at some of the cars I mentioned, and tell me what you like and don't like... If I can get a better idea of exactly what you are looking for I can try to give more specific recommendations... let me know, thanks!
