Tips on Buying Cars: Buying a car for a very old person, mercury marquis, gm vehicles

Question
Hello Robert. Maybe this is not your expertise, but what the hell. I would like to buy a car for my 82-year-old Dad. He can barely walk, but he can still drive, and just got his driver's license renewed. He has getting in and out of the car issues, and all the issues you may expect from an old person who's slowed way down. My question: what make of car would you recommend I buy? Thank you.

Answer
Retired people seem to favor larger, heavier cars for personal safety reasons. The Mercury Marquis, Lincoln and Cadillac are the first to come to mind but there are others. Also, Lincoln and Cadillac SUV's may work if climbing up and into the car is not an issue. Make sure the car has full fields of vision and avoid smaller rear windshields as they create blind spots when backing up or changing lanes. A four door is appropriate as the doors are smaller and easier to operate than a coupe with large heavy doors. A back up camera is a real plus if you can splurge. Dad would appreciate this feature. It appears Detroit is trending to lift their new cars higher than usual but not as high as the SUV. These new GM vehicles may be appropriate but be careful that their fields of view are not restricted.
