Tips on Buying Cars: Buying Car from out of State and driving home, purchasing a car, dmv office

Question
Hello,

I plan on purchasing a car in the state of Oregon and driving it back to Pennsylvania, where I will have it registered and garaged.

I am purchasing this car from a private party, not a dealer, so where do I get temporary plates from so I can drive?  Do I have to alert my insurance carrier?  I wont have the title until the purchase day but I can get the VIN number.

Any advice, tips, and information is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Best Regards,

Kevin

Answer
Kevin,

Thanks for your question.  You will have to go to the local DMV office in the city that you are buying the vehicle from, and explain to them that you are going to be titling the vehicle in another state.  They will be able to faciliate your temporary tag.  I would always alert your insurance carrier before you take delivery of the new vehicle from your seller.

Hope this helps, and good luck.

Thanks - JB
