QuestionI am thinking about purchasing a new crossover like the Rogue, Murano, Rav 4, Honda CRV, Santa Fe. I live on Long Island and do not drive off road.
What are the pluses and minuses of AWD vs. FWD. Is the extra $1500 for AWD worth the cost?
Which of the above do you is best. I only drive about 5,000 miles per year.

Concerning your question about the advantages and disadvantages of AWD and FWD.
(a) AWD costs more as you already mentioned
(b) AWD vehicles typically have higher fuel consumption due to the extra weight and the extra driveline friction due to the extra components (i.e. Transfer Case) etc..
(c) AWD will provide you with better traction in snowy or rainy conditions. I am not sure how much snow you get in Long Island, but if you get a great deal of snow it will help you drive more safely.
(d) One additional solution which could be an alternative to AWD is to buy a set of wheels and good winter tires (i.e. Bridgestone Blizzaks). I live in Michigan and I have a FWD vehicle with a good set of winter tires. It makes a tremendous difference and may be enough to meet your needs, especially if you drive only 5000 miles. One drawback is that you need to change the tires in the Spring and Fall. If you have a Discount Tire, they will switch them for you for free ever season change.
