Tips on Buying Cars: contract, house manager, rental agreement

Question
hi my name is jessie i just purchased a used car about month ago and now the dealer is calling me telling me that the contract from the bank got sent back to him all because on person didn't pick up the phone when i purchased the car i had everything that they asked for. I even gave them my rental agreement for where i was living however they said because of the house manager not answering the phone they returned my contract back to the dealer, he also stated that i have not even made my first payment and i am so confused cause if the contract got returned then how can they be asking for a payment? do they have a right to do this to me? i am so clueless!

Answer
Jessie,

Thanks for your question.  This unfortunately can be the case.  In situations where your deal requires information from other sources that is out of your control, this can happen.  Understand that this is not the dealership's fault, or the banks.  You do, and are contractually obligated to make that first payment by that date.  You will need to take a check or money to the dealership so that they can return the contract with that check for your first payment.  Secondly, you need to call the guy that didn't answer the phone on your behalf.  You need to go down to him, and sit with him while he makes the call to the bank to verify your residence.  You can call the dealership and ask them what number this person will need to call.  Make your landlord call this person, and explain why they need to call the bank.

Work with the dealership to help you out of this situation.  DO NOT TAKE THE CAR BACK TO THE DEALERSHIP WITHOUT TALKING TO ME FIRST!

Hope this helps.

Thanks - JB
