Tips on Buying Cars: Buying 2008 Honda, honda accord, markup

Question
Presently my husband have a Honda Accord 2004 which he still owes
$11,000  He was at the dealer today for mtce. service and now he has
decided to trade in his car for a 2008 Honda.  He was told that they would
give him $7,000 for his car, the one he want to purchase is about 18,700.
There was some sought of calculation letting him know the 2008 car would
be 23,545 something around those figures his payment for his car now is
$365.00 and for the 2008 payment will be $405.00 monthly.  My question is
can't they lower the price on this car

Answer
Michael,

Thanks for your question.  Every dealer has markup in a vehicle, unless they are offering that vehicle as a vehicle that "must go" or it has already been marked down for the dealer to get rid of it.  If they are selling the vehicle for the suggested retail price or MSRP if the vehicle is new, then yes you can negotiate the price.  Every dealer should be able to make a profit, and you should be able to get a good deal.  They two have to come to terms, have to agree.  If you are comfortable that you are getting a good deal, or you like the car, or you are comfortable with the payments, then go for it.  If you seek lower payments or are not convinced that you are getting a good deal, then go online and see what the average sells price is for a vehicle like the one that you are buying, and be armed with that information when you go in to finalize the deal.  Go to edmunds.com to see what the average selling price for a vehicle like the one you are buying is.

Hope this helps.

Thanks - JB
