Tips on Buying Cars: dealer refuses to give licence plate, dmv office, bill of sale

Question
I bought (financed) a car from a non-franchised dealer. Now, the dealer refuses to give me the license plate and registration, demanding more money. What are my options? I have the original bill of sale in hand. also, I suppose my bank should have the "white slip" since the dealer would have not been paid otherwise...

Answer
AD,

In short, they are breaking the law.  They can not "refuse" to give you your registration and plates.  Those are a legal document, and because such, they are required to give them to you.  You can call your local DMV office and explain the situation to them, and see what course of action you have.  A dealer, whether franchised or not, can not hold license plates or registration because of any reason.  It is against the law.

Hope this helps.
